About Queensland's defence industry

Queensland is the second largest State for defence employment, home to 21 per cent of the national Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel base. This significant defence presence, along with the State's diverse and dynamic economy, skilled workforce and enviable lifestyle, has attracted international companies with defence capabilities to base their headquarters or significant operations in Queensland. These companies include Australian Aerospace, Boeing Australia Limited, Haulmark Trailers, Raytheon Australia and Thales Australia.

After nearly a decade of strong growth, Queensland's defence industry has become a significant contributor to the State's economy (one per cent of Queensland's Gross State Product). In 2007-08, Queensland's defence industry was estimated to achieve annual revenues of AUD$1.4 billion and employ 13,000 people.

Future growth across the defence industry is driven by unprecedented levels of defence spending. The 2008-09 ADF budget estimated defence-related spending at AUD$6.35 billion and budget growth has been forecast at three per cent annually through to 2018.

With an increased focus on this key industry and its existing strong sub-sectors within the State, Queensland is now being recognised for what it has become - Australia's defence destination.
