What is biotechnology?

Using living things to create products or to do tasks for human beings is a general description of biotechnology or 'biotech' as it's often referred to.

Biotechnology is the practice of using plants, animals and micro-organisms such as bacteria, as well as biological processes - such as the ripening of fruit or the bacteria that break down compost - to some benefit.

For example, in industry, medicine and agriculture, biotechnology is used to produce foods, medicines, test for diseases and remove waste.

It can also be used to solve problems and conduct research. Over time, biotechnology has formed the basis of learning about people and diseases.

Biotechnology has also underpinned the development of treatments.

Exploring the world of biotechnology

Biotechnology's applications span the health and medical, agricultural, environmental and industrial sectors and is set to play a vitally important role in all our lives through:

  • better vaccines and drugs for humans and animals
  • faster and more accurate diagnosis of diseases and toxins
  • higher yields in crops which reduce the need for pesticides and water
  • more nutritious and better quality foods
  • more environmentally-friendly products such as biofuels (e.g. ethanol and biodiesel), bioplastics, and greener chemicals that reduce the world's reliance on petrochemical-based products.

To encourage the growth of the State's biotechnology industry, the Queensland Government has put in place a strong and transparent ethical and regulatory environment framework.

Recognising the enormous potential biotechnology offers, this emerging industry is at the heart of the Queensland Government's Smart State Strategy.
