Gene technology and genetically modified organismsGene technology refers to a range of molecular techniques that allow the direct alteration of the genetic material of living things (organisms) so they may produce new or modified substances, or perform new or changed functions. Genetically modified crops are one example of this technology. To protect the health and safety of people and the environment from the risks posed by, or as a result of gene technology, the Commonwealth Government and Queensland have enacted complementary legislation to regulate this technology. The Commonwealth's Gene Technology Act 2000 was enacted in December 2000. The Queensland Gene Technology Act 2001 commenced in November 2001 and mirrors the Commonwealth's legislation.
