Queensland's biotechnology industry

The Queensland Government is committed to establishing the State as the centre of excellence in biotechnology in the Asia Pacific and is predicted to employ over 16,000 people and generate $4 billion in revenues to an industry worth $20 billion by 2025. 

The Government's integrated approach, from discovery through to BioPharmaceuticals Australia scale-up manufacturing facility and clinical trials, and progressive regulatory environment have created a dynamic and growing industry. 

Queensland's biotechnology industry boasts:

  • around 90 core biotech companies which employ 1,900 biotechnologists (2006/07)
  • 66 biotech-related research institutes which employ 5,700 researchers (2006/07)
  • revenues of $395M for companies and $501M for research institutes (2006/07)
  • 23 drugs in clinical trials and successful commercialisation of Gardasil, the world's first cervical cancer vaccine.
