UAV Challenge - Outback Rescue

The UAV Challenge - Outback Rescue will take place in the regional Queensland town of Kingaroy from 28 September - 1 October 2009.

The UAV Challenge is a joint initiative between the Queensland Government and the Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation (ARCAA, a partnership between QUT and CSIRO).

The event was conceived to promote the development of Unmanned Airborne Vehicle (UAV) technologies and their use in civil applications. Civil applications can include crop management, traffic control, wildlife surveillance and stock and environmental monitoring. The UAV Challenge focuses solely on the search and rescue capabilities of UAVs, with entrants tasked to locate and assist someone 'lost' in the Australian outback.

When: 28 September - 1 October 2009

Where: Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia

Who: Australian high school students, national and international university students and professional enthusiasts (national and international)

Challenge: Outback rescue mission - find and assist 'Outback Joe', a lost bush walker in Australia's vast outback using UAVs

Categories:

High school airborne delivery challenge - deliver an 'emergency' package to someone lost in the Outback. Each team is given 30 minutes to deliver a 50 gram, 43mm sphere (a golf ball) on to a one-metre wide target zone

Open search and rescue challenge - find 'Outback Joe' and deliver emergency supplies within an hour

Prizes:

A$50,000 - winning team of the open category
A$10,000 - winning team of the high school category
There will also be documentary challenges for the open and high school categories
