ClimateSmart 2050

In July 2007, the Queensland Government released its climate change strategy "ClimateSmart 2050", to help Queensland manage, adapt and mitigate against climate change.

ClimateSmart 2050 outlines a number of major initiatives to help move Queensland to a low carbon future including:

  • expansion of the Queensland 13 per cent Gas Scheme to 18 per cent by 2020
  • provision of $50 million for a Renewable Energy Fund to promote research and development in renewable energy technologies
  • commitment to a renewable and low emissions energy target of 10 per cent by 2020
  • investment in clean coal technologies with carbon capture and storage
  • investment in energy savings programs for business and consumers.

ClimateSmart 2050 encourages the development of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy as well as low carbon emission technologies, such as hydrogen and fuel cells.
